Post-Operative Care After Dental Implant Surgery: A Complete Recovery Guide

Dental implants are a permanent solution for missing teeth. However, complete care after implant surgery is important for proper healing and long-term success.

What Matters

After placement of the implant, the jawbone needs time to fuse properly with the implant, a process known as osseointegration. Proper post-operative care helps in reducing pain, preventing infection, and it also ensures stability of implant.

Why Post-Operative Care Matters

After the implant is placed, the jawbone needs time to fuse properly with it — a process known as osseointegration. Following the right post-operative care helps in:

• Reducing pain

Immediate Care After Surgery

• Bite on gauze for 30 to 45 minutes after the procedure

• Mild bleeding may be present for up to 24 hours

• Do not spit or rinse your mouth on the day of surgery

• Do not use a straw on the day of surgery

Pain Management and Medicines

• Use an ice pack externally for reducing swelling

• Take the prescribed medicines and antibiotics on time

• Swelling will peak in the first 48 hours and then it will reduce gradually 

Oral Hygiene Instructions

• DO NOT  brush the site of surgery  for at least 24 hours

• Brush all the other teeth normally but not for the first 24 hours

• You can rinse gently from the second day onwards with salt water or mouthwash recommended to you by the dentist.

Diet After Implant Surgery

• One should eat a soft diet, either cold or lukewarm foods only.

• Liquid diets like curd, soups, dal, and mashed vegetables are ideal.

• Avoid hard foods and avoid chewing from the implant/surgery side.

• Avoid eating anything hot or spicy.

Things to Avoid After Implant Surgery

• DO NOT  smoke or drink alcohol for at least 7 to 10 days after surgery.

• Avoid doing any heavy exercise for at least 48 hours after surgery.

When to Call Your Dentist

Contact us if you notice these signs - 

• Bleeding in excess at the surgical site

• Severe pain or swelling after 3 days of surgery

• Fever, pus, or looseness around the implant area

Follow-Up Care

•  Attend follow up visits. 

• If stitches are placed, then those will be removed after 7 to 10 days of surgery.
